River Ayr

A challenging walk that can be done in stages walking (or on off road bikes?), the route stretches from its source at Glenbuck Loch in Cumnock to Ayr Harbour.

The total route spans 66.25km (41 miles) and is routinely walked in stages across three days making it the ideal weekend trip. 

Stage one spans from Glenbuck to Sorn and stretches 28.5km (17.75 miles) taking an average 7.5 to 8 hours through moorland and is the longest day.

Stage two takes you from Sorn, crossing the Old Bridge, to Stair in Mauchline.   Spanning 19.25km (12 miles) the route will take between 6.5 and 7 hours.

The final stage leads from Stair Bridge to Ayr Harbour where the river meets the to sea towards Arran.   A similar walk to stage two through open farmland, the 19.5km (12 mile) route will take 6.5 to 7 hours to complete.

Please note there is no public transport to Glenbuck Loch but you can park at Glenbuck Heritage Car Park.
