Depending on your starting point, the Trail stretches from South Beach Esplanade in Troon all the way to Dundonald Castle & Visitors Centre.

Named after Dundonald’s eighteenth century to the smuggling trade, the10.1 km (6.3 mile) walk is said to have transported tea, rum, tobacco and other worldly goods from boats arriving in Troon.

The walk will take around two hours and features many historical points of interest.

Passing Crosbie Castle said to have been built in 1240 and home to the Fullarton clan who moved to Fullarton House in 1745 when it was built by Colonel William Fullarton, a good friend of Robert Burns.

Pass Collennan Reservoir and Dundonald Wood, a designated site of special scientific interest and a recognised Ancient Woodland.

Dundonald Castle is well worthy of a visit.  A royal residency of the Stuart Kings, it is said to have been Robert II’s favourite residence and his resting place in 1390.

There is plenty of signage and information boards along the way and car parking is available both by South Beach and Dundonald.
